Freestyle Dance Classes

Freestyle is a style of dance that takes its roots from many past dance forms such as 1950’s Rock and Roll, 60’s and 70’s beat dancing but mainly the disco era. Overtime the term Freestyle replaced the name Disco due to the nature of how freestyle evolves to incorporate new trends and steps. Disco steps were often quite static, simple and easy to execute. Freestyle has developed to include drags, leaps, kicks and spins.

Hip Hop/Commercial/Street Dance is a fairly new area of dance yet it is one of the most popular. With routines being choreographed to the beats a funky and fun style is created.

Many of the current pop stars use this style of dance within their videos which is one of the main reasons for it’s popularity and its inclusion in the Freestyle genre of dance. As a result of the growth of Freestyle dance medal tests were introduced and record numbers were entering into these examinations.

Until recently the syllabus has been left to the discretion of the teacher with their judgement being used on the complexity and development shown as they progress through the medals.

In 2012 the IDTA released a Freestyle syllabus to encourage uniformity in the standard/level required to gain each particular grade this is for use in class and for examinations. Over the course of 2016 the syllabus is being re-introduced to teachers with updates and developments.
